How to make a summer survival kit

It’s summer, so are you on the move? Going places, that is. A summer survival kit is handy to have with you on a road trip or a hike, at the beach, park, playground or picnic. Keep a spare one in the car. Having a survival kit is living the Boy Scout motto: “Be prepared.”

Moms and dads have been putting together survival kits for years. They’re important to have year round, but it’s even more crucial during the summer when outdoor activities are at the forefront.

Here are a few suggestions for making a Summer Survival Kit:

  1. Sunscreen. Whether you have fair skin or dark, everyone needs protection from UVA and UVB rays. Prevent sunburn and sun damage—they are the major causes of premature aging of the skin.
  2. Water bottle. Staying hydrated is important. Keeping a water bottle is environmentally sound, as you won’t be throwing away plastic that goes into the landfill.
  3. Hand sanitizer. Water is not always available, but germs are everywhere.
  4. Hat and umbrella. Not only do they protect from the sun, but they also help keep you dry.
  5. Bandages and antibiotic ointment. You just never know when you might need one to cover up a scrape, blister or cut. The ointment medicates and helps prevent the bandage from sticking.

  1. Snacks. Hunger is not pleasant, and if you are diabetic or have low blood sugar, it’s even more imperative to carry a quick munchie everywhere. Make sure you pack non-perishables with a long shelf life, such as crackers or energy bars.
  2. Toilet paper and/or Kleenex.
  3. Pain reliever and antihistamine. Bring your favorite brands, ones that are proven to work for you and your family.
  4. Bug spray and anti-itch spray. The great outdoors can also be the source of the unbearable rash.
  5. Laminine and Laminine OMEGA+++. You know why! Happy summer!
